How To Boost Your Search Engine Rankings |
|
|
|
|
1. Make sure your web site has descriptive title tags that contain the keywords you are targeting for your web site. Usually it is best to only put your company name on your "contact" page or "about us" page because if you put it on every web page you will loose keyword relevancy. The title tag should put your most important keywords first. Usually the recommended title length is 8 words. Next make sure you use heading tags for your headerings and sub-headings on your website.
2. Your homepage should contain links to most of the pages of your web site. If you bury your links, the search engines may not index all of your web pages.
Make sure that if you use a Flash or Javascript menu, that you put a separate menu in <noscript></noscript> tags so that the search engines can read your links.
3. Use Meta Description tags and Keyword tags. The format should be the following: <META NAME="Keywords" CONTENT="keyword 1, keyword 2, keyword 3">
<META NAME="Description" CONTENT="Description of your company or business, don't forget to put your keywords in your description">
4. Type in the keywords that you are targeting into Google and search. Click on the top web site that comes up and right click with your mouse and select "view source." By looking at the source code of the web site, you can see how the top-ranking web site has achieved success and copy their methods.
5. Try link building with web sites that are not directly competing with your market. Google and other search engines give you a page ranking based somewhat on how many sites link to your web site.
A good place to start is any company affiliations that you have, friends, colleagues, and forums.
6. Make sure you are listed in the open directory (www.dmoz.org). The open directory is a free non-profit directory that can boost your Google page rankings. A Yahoo directory listing may also boost your search engine rankings, though there is a price of $300 to be listed on Yahoo for commercial businesses.
7. Don't build a web site purely in Flash. A site entirely built in Flash will not rank in search engines because search engines can not index the text of Flash web sites.
8. Add plenty of content to your web site. The more content the search engines can index on your web site, the better. Make useful articles and guides on your website related to your industry.
9. Put in anchor tags on web pages that link to content further down on the page. Make sure to link the text that has your keywords in it. An anchor tag looks like <a href="#keywords-further-down-page">Anchor text</a>.
10. Use Google's keyword suggestion tool to find keywords related to your main target keyword. Many times there is tons of competition for the obvious keywords for your industry, but hardly any for more specific and targeted keywords.
11. Join forums related to your industry. Post in the forums (not spam, but real comments) and in your forum post make sure you have your website linked in your posting signature. This link will help your rankings.
12. Download the Google toolbar and use the page rank feature to find out how your websites page rank. Also, check your backlinks, similar pages, and cached version of your pages to make sure everything is going as you planned on your search engine optimization campaign. Also check the backlinks of your competitors, and see if you can get backlinks at some of the same websites to build your page rank.
